{"id":31,"date":"2006-12-08T15:31:19","date_gmt":"2006-12-08T22:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/2006\/12\/08\/chertoff-thinks-its-righteous-to-give-each-traveler-a-terror-score\/"},"modified":"2006-12-08T15:32:08","modified_gmt":"2006-12-08T22:32:08","slug":"chertoff-thinks-its-righteous-to-give-each-traveler-a-terror-score","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/2006\/12\/08\/chertoff-thinks-its-righteous-to-give-each-traveler-a-terror-score\/","title":{"rendered":"Chertoff thinks it&#8217;s &#8220;righteous&#8221; to give each traveler a terror score"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everywhere he goes this  week, Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff is being <a title=\"Furor over IDP comments on the ATS\" href=\"http:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/2006\/12\/08\/if-you-travel-youre-still-a-target\/\">dogged by questions<\/a> about the <a title=\"IDP comments on the illegality of ATS\" href=\"http:\/\/papersplease.org\/wp\/2006\/12\/05\/every-traveler-is-a-target\/\">illegality<\/a> of the &#8220;Automated Targeting System&#8221; we pointed out in our <a title=\"IDP comments and text of the law\" href=\"http:\/\/hasbrouck.org\/IDP\/IDP-ATS-comments.pdf\">comments<\/a> filed Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Today in Atlanta, <a title=\"AP story quoting Chertoff in Atlanta\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessnorthga.com\/news\/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=84304\">Chertoff had this to say<\/a> about the scheme that is <a title=\"Current status of ATS\" href=\"http:\/\/hasbrouck.org\/blog\/archives\/001189.html\">already<\/a> being used to archive your last 40 years of travel records, use them and everything else the government can find out about you to assign you a terror &#8220;risk assessment&#8221; each time you cross a U.S. border, and use that score to decide whether to let you travel:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not only legal but required by law,&#8221; Chertoff said during a visit to<br \/>\nAtlanta. &#8220;I think this is a righteous program.&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Literally every day we&#8217;re turning people away&#8221; at U.S. entry points,<br \/>\nChertoff said.<\/p>\n<p>And he asserted that the ATS has &#8220;no cost to privacy or human rights.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The AP story that reported this didn&#8217;t say whether Chertoff said godliness or cleanliness are among the 50+ factors used to calculate this &#8220;righteous&#8221; score.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everywhere he goes this week, Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff is being dogged by questions about the illegality of the &#8220;Automated Targeting System&#8221; we pointed out in our comments filed Monday.
